Stag symbolism and lore :

The Stag was one of the most mystical Celtic animals, often mentioned in legends about shape-shifting. The symbolism of the stag in Celtic religion and mythology was concerned with the articular qualities the animal was perceived to possess – being fast, virile and aggressive during the rutting season. They are kings of the forest, their antlers symbolic of the spreading trees oft he wood. The growth and shedding of their antlers in spring and autumn has endowed stags with seasonal imagery. The stag would appear to represent fertility, the abundance oft he forest, speed and prestige.
Magic or supernatural stags often figure In Irish and Welsh traditions. Many Irish tales allude to the enticement of humans to the Otherworld by stags. In the Fenian Cycle, the war-leader Fionn hunts an enchanted stag, metamorphosed from the Irish god Donn.Fionn`s wife is turned into a fawn by the Black Druid, and their son Oisin is considered as hald deer, half child. Flidais is an Irish goddess of wild things, including deer. In Welsh stories, Pwyll, lord of Dyfed, hunts mystical white stag , which is the quarry of Arawn, god of Annwn and int he Tale of Culhwch and Olwen, Culhwch is helped to hunt the enchanted boar Twrch Trwyth by a supernatural stag with whom he can communicate.
Even In archeological record there are instances of semi-zoomorphic, semi-human divine images : the Horned gods and goddesses and Cernunnos, the antlered deity, spring to mind as known shape-shifters . A number of early Celtic images of stags are recorded, found as companions of gods or in imagery of divine hunt. Some gods were especially linked with stags, having antlers on their heads, showing essential affinity with the animal, and sometimes appearing with stags as companions. The stag even featured in certain complex Celtic ritual activities.

The Insular Celts have stories involving supernatural deer, deer who are associated with a spiritual figure, and spirits or deities who may take the form of deer.
In some Scottish and Irish tales deer are seen as "fairy cattle" and are herded and milked by a tutelary, benevolent, otherworldly woman (such as a bean sìdhe or in other cases the goddess Flidais), who can shapeshift into the form of a red or white deer.In the West Highlands, this woman of the otherworld selects the individual deer who will be slain in the next day's hunt.[5]

In Ireland, The Cailleach Bhéara ("The Old Woman of Beare"), who lives on an island off the coast of County Cork, takes the form of a deer to avoid capture, and herds her deer down by the shore. The Beare peninsula is also associated with the islands in the western sea that are the lands of the dead.
